Vintage Designer History, Jean Desses

Jean Desses, was born in Alexandria, Egypt (although his ancestry was in fact Greek) in 1904. He originally studied law, before taking an interest in design and taking up work with a well known Parisian couture house called Maison Jane. He eventually opened his own atelier in 1937, although he didn't become very well known, until after the war had ended.
Early on it was quite obvious that his own family history and back ground had influenced the way he designed. His technical complexity was very similar to Vionnet and Balenciaga, in that, it was all about sculptural aesthetics. He was a master with his 2 preferred fabrics, chiffon and mousseline.
His dresses often featured intricate pleating and beautiful draping, which covered structured formal bodices. He also, often featured, full skirts swept back at different angles, all resulting in visually stunning, beautifully elegant pieces.
These weren't the only materials he used however, he was also extremely adept with other materials, such as rough tweeds and dress wools. When he wasn't focusing on gowns, some of his favorite features were, voluminous sleeves, dropped shoulder lines and draped collars.
Jean Desses designs were extremely popular among the Hollywood elite and much of the European royalty. He designed the wedding dress for princess Sophia of Greece to her marriage to Prince Juan Carlos of Spain. (Juan Carlos. doesn't get any more Spanish than that!)
In 1951, Vogue called his latest collection of dresses, the 'Fords' of his career and indeed they were! (Jennifer Lopez wore one to the 2006 Academy awards, Renee Zelleweger wore one to the Oscars in 2001 and Kirsten Davis wore one to the snore fest that was the SATC2 premier).
Desses continued to operate his clothing house into the 1960s. He did not find the changing times of fashion difficult to adjust to, as his skills lended them selves well to using stiffer fabrics with simple silhouettes. However due to failing health, he closed his couture house in 1965 and retired to Greece, where he passed away just 5 years later. His work and influences were passed on to many other designers, including his two rather well known assistants, Guy Laroche and Valentino Garavani.
Of course anyone in the fashion world is familiar with these 2 names. Valentino would go on to open his own house in Rome in 1959 and LaRoche in Paris in 1957. Both of these men have often referenced Jean Desses as a huge inspiration to them and their collections. The most obvious being, the shade Valentino called Valentino red after Jean Desses started to favor a similar color in his later collections.

The Real Secret of the Rose

Roses are one the primary gifts given all around the globe. They have been associated with love as well as war. There is even a war called "The War of the Roses" which was fought in England in the 1400's, but most associate the plant with the symbol of love. This idea goes back to 500 B.C. where Venus, the goddess of love, was associated with the plant and it was her sister, the goddess of flowers, who create the rose.
There are over one hundred species of this plant and the plant itself dates back to about 35 million years ago. It has even been noted that people on the Asian continent started to cultivate the rose about 5 thousand years ago.
During the times when the Romans ruled the world slaves where forced by their rulers to grow this flower instead of food. The Romans even used them in their baths and fountain's as decorations. And in the 1600's the plant was in such huge demand that the law even stated that they could be used as legal tender.
Rose perfume is made from the petals and then made into rose oil. This is also called rose Otto. Rose oil is used more than any other ingredient in perfumes around the world.
Roses are also used in art and the first known painter to paint it was in Crete about 3500 years ago. The Catholic Church said the rose was the highest honor and it was used in many paintings for the church.
The berry fruits from the rose bush can be used to make wide variety of culinary dishes. You can add them to jellies, breads and stews, for example. These are also rich in vitamin C and such rose mixtures where even given to children during World War to help them stay in good health.
Scientists also believe that Osteoarthritis can be helped by using the plants powder. The powder is made from the hips of the plant. The hips have a high level of antioxidant which can be used as an anti-inflammatory agent. Herbal tea can also be made out of the rose. Again, the rose hip will be used for this. You boil the dried rose hips to make his tea.
With modern technology you can even get your picture or text on live roses. These are called speaking roses, or printed roses. Imagine surprising a loved one with a picture of you both on your bouquet of roses!

Car-Less Places: Oaklavia

Oakland, California - At 10 A.M. another "Ciclavia" session began. Oaklavia, as it is called in this instance, is a special metropolitan area in which a formerly car-dominated downtown district is temporarily transformed into blocks of wide open space where even toddlers play safely in the middle of the street.
Ciclavias have occurred in other cities such as New York and elsewhere. This is one of the first to happen in Oakland.
My wife and I have lived our whole lives in Oakland but we've never experienced it without cars in the streets, so we decided to check it out.
The car-less spaces weren't quite contiguous but the police and the event volunteers ensured that cyclists and pedestrians didn't wait long, or at all, to move between each car-less segment.
To be honest, even with police blocking oncoming traffic, it was still tough to relax in the middle of the street. Seeing a mother and child in the roadway was truly surreal. No fear of imminent death in these two: just joy at being out on a Sunday in a wide-open space.
Once the lack of car noise and the abundance of space set in, it truly was liberating and incredibly stimulating. Events like this and cycling in general flood you with so much more detail about your surroundings than you would normally get. Being in a steel and glass enclosure moving at high velocity (aka a car) robs you of so many parts of a place.
The smells of all the food alone made the trip worthwhile: like those from an outdoor café setup in the street in front of Ratto's Market & Deli, not to mention the Oaklavia barbecue.
Moving through downtown this way, you just plain notice things you didn't know were there. My wife (the gardener) found a little garden half of a block down from the city jail, with a nice view of the Federal Building in the background. Who knew? How would you know given that this one-lane boulevard (aka freeway) is what the garden sits along. Today, without the fear of imminent death by car, we could literally stop and smell the roses, or at least the tomatoes. Yum!
While we were investigating the garden, we met an event volunteer. His sweet cargo bike can haul up to 600 lbs. and cost $1,100. That's more than my friend Randall can haul on his Bilenky. Awesome.
All in all, Oaklavia was a huge success in giving people such great new perspectives and experiences on their city. Now, if this kind of car-less open space could just be made pervasive and permanent.
The cyclavía website specifies that these temporary spaces are purely for recreation. This essentially turns streets into a temporary park. This is a wonderful thing. However, removing cars from a business district like this is reminiscent of another type of space that has a more lasting and possibly more profound impact on one's life: the plaza.
Europe is full of these plazas, piazzas, and platzs, i.e. massive car-less spaces where people gather, not just on weekends but everyday, e.g. Trafalgar Square, St. Peter's Square, Marienplatz, etc. In these places, you feel safe from cars not just while you recreate but while you work, dine, shop, run errands, etc. In other words, you feel safe from cars virtually all the time. Living life without the fear of imminent death by car is a refreshing if not a profound shift in your mind's focus. Suddenly, brainpower currently spent on parking, driving, and dodging cars is available to ponder other things. Ponder the possibilities of that.
Europe is not necessarily more enlightened about public spaces. They've got their share of car-obsession, -dominance, and -congestion. These plazas are simply legacy spaces left over from the pre-car era. Since much of the U.S. was designed and built during the car-obsessed 20th century, we have relatively few car-less places. "Drive-through" everything seems to be our legacy in many cities. Fortunately, many in the U.S. feel this needs to change.

Paul Simon was born in Newark, New Jersey, in 1941 and was raised in Queens, New York. Arthur Ira Garfunkel was born in Queens, New York in 1942. Fate happened in 1953 when Paul and Art met in elementary school and continued their friendship into high school.
By their junior year, they had formed the singing duo of Tom and Jerry. Influenced by The Everly Brothers, they formed their tight harmonies and recorded their first single, "Hey Schoolgirl" in 1957.

By 1969, Paul and Art needed a break from each other. Art wanted to pursue an acting career and appeared in the films "Catch 22", "Carnal Knowledge" and "Bad Timing." They finally split in 1970, but not before recording their biggest album together, "Bridge Over Troubled Water."

Home Karaoke - Where And When Did It Originate?

Everyone is familiar with Karaoke. It has become a part of our social fabric. It is a popular form of entertainment that can be found at parties, bars, restaurants and in our homes. But for those who do not know, Karaoke is when someone sings along to prerecorded music using a microphone and speakers. A person chooses from a list of songs, usually well-known or from your own personal favorites, and sings along when the machine plays the song without the lead vocals. Two screens are most often used to display lyrics to both the singer and the audience. The lyrics change color or a moving image is used to tell us when the words should be sung. It is a simple invention, but one that provides hours of fun and is enjoyed though out the world.
But where did Karaoke Originate?
While singing along to music that does not have lead vocals has been around for as long as recorded music. It was not until the development of audio and visual devices does Karaoke start to resemble the form we see today. There are two main disputes of who invented Karaoke. The first claim is that karaoke styled machines were invented by a popular Japanese musician, Daisuke Inoue. It is a custom in Japan to provide musical entertainment for your guest at parties or at a dinner. In 1970 Daisuke, a drummer, was asked by his audience to provide a recording of his music so they could sing along at a company sponsored vacation. He soon realized a potential market for this and made a machine that played a song for 100 yen.
Daisuke then leased this machine out to various stores, restaurants, hotel etc. 100 yen in the 1970 was the same price as two lunches, so this was, at first considered an expensive fad. But it soon caught on and became a popular form of entertainment. But Daisuke never issued a patent for his machine. Missing out on becoming one of the richest men in Japan.
The other claim is from a Filipino named Roberto del Rasario. Many Filipino musicians were immigrating to Japan during the late 1960's and early 1970's. They soon began to devise ways to enjoy their music without having to pay out large fees for live musicians. So to cut cost of a live band and generate a larger revenue, a sing-along musical system started to development which they called 'minus-one music'. Which is sing-along music recorded on a cassette tapes. Roberto del Rasario, an inventor, developed the sing along system in 1975 and Rasario did get a patent for his system in the 1980's. And it is him that holds the patent for the device we now call the Karaoke Machine.
Regardless of which claim is true, Karaoke began to spread through the world. First to Asia in the 1980's and then to the rest of the world in the 1990's. It has become a popular staple for many nightclubs and bars. And as technology developed, karaoke crept its way into our homes. History of the World Famous Fender Guitar

The Fender 'Broadcaster', now known as the Fender Telecaster, was the first mass-produced solid body electric guitar, and the Precision Bass guitar or P-bass as it was then, was the first mass-produced electric bass guitar.
That's how important the Fender Musical Instrument Corporation are to the history of the electric guitar. Yes, others had produced electric guitars, but Fender was the first to mass-produce them and sell guitars in very large quantities. The Stratocaster is still one of the most popular instruments for today's guitarists.
Leo Fender a Southern Californian inventor, improved on the hollow body guitar that was around back in the 1940s by using an innovative and very simple solid-body electric guitar design. This also enabled him to mass-produce the instrument for a more streamline production line.
The Fender Telecaster:
In 1951 the Telecaster was born, the first solid-body mass-produced guitar.
Precision Bass Guitar:
In the same year he invented the revolutionary Precision bass guitar.
A bass guitar with frets, a very new concept and having frets meant it could be play with 'Precision' and it could be amplified which liberated bassists from the guess and play hard to hear bass guitars of the day. This really was a milestone in the history of guitars.
The World Famous Stratocaster Guitar:
Then back in 1954 Leo invented a user-friendlier model. The world famous Stratocaster guitar. A guitar that this time had three pick-ups a sleek contoured body, which made the instrument more comfortable to play. He also added a double cutaway to the design of the guitar, so the guitarist could access the upper registers of the instrument.
Leo still felt there was something missing for his new Stratocaster design. The country bands liked the pedal steel guitars, so Leo decided to add a tremolo arm to enable the musician to bend the strings and achieve a pedal steel type sound that was so popular among the country and western folks.
Sale to CBS:
Due to poor health Leo Fender sold the company to CBS in 1965. The Columbia Broadcasting System, bought out Fender for a cool $13 million, almost two million more then they paid for the New York Yankees a year before. After selling the Fender company, Leo Fender founded Music Man in 1975, and later founded the G&L Musical Instruments company, which manufactures electric guitars and basses based on his later designs.
The sale unfortunately led to a reduction in the quality of Fender's guitars due to "cost-cutting" from the CBS management team. Several cosmetic changes occurred after 1965/1966, such as a larger headstock shape on certain guitars. A bolder black headstock logo, as well as a brushed aluminium face plate with blue or red labels depending the model of the guitar. Bound necks with block shaped position markers were introduced in 1966.

• Type of event: If you are organising a reception with a 'networking' element to it, or a dinner where people wish to speak to each other, loud music isn't going to work. On the other hand, after dinner entertainment where guests want to dance will require a band playing louder music.
• Venue: The size of the venue is crucial. A harpist playing in a huge hall with high ceilings is likely to be lost. Likewise a large band playing in a small room is going to be overpowering, with the music sound being 'muddied'. Choose the size of your musical ensemble and instruments based on the size of your room. Also, if you have a space with two or more rooms, you will need to consider where to locate the musicians, so that they can be heard.
• Size of the event: A small event where there are 20 guests is unlikely to require as loud background music as at a larger event. However, it is down to personal taste as to whether a large band is required later on!
• Theme of the event: There are plenty of musical styles that theme an event just as much as dressing a venue or servicing specific food. A steel band playing as guests arrive or a Scottish Piper serenading guests creates an impact as people arrive. Flamenco musicians and dancers for after dinner entertainment or a jazz band playing will enhance an event creating a memorable ambience. • Time of day: During the day, most events involve guests wishing to speak to each other and to meet new people. Loud music doesn't work in those situations. Other instruments can be relatively close to each other and they take up less space than you expect. My advice would be to calculate the area available and ask the musicians if they can perform within that area.
• Instruments available: If there is a Steinway Grand piano available at the venue, it seems a shame not to use it! Pianists could play classical/crossover music, or a jazz pianist would be thrilled to perform on it!
• Age groups: As a rule of thumb, as we get older, we appreciate loud music less. Also, different age groups have varied tastes. We always recommend discussing the music with the musicians and to agree a range of musical styles before the event to suit different tastes. A dance band would offer music "From the 60s to the noughties" to cover every taste.
