For places of worship, however, the decision to switch from analog to digital mixing can often be a difficult one. Limited funds are often allocated to other areas of ministry, leaving many churches using antiquated sound equipment and unaware of the potential benefits of going digital.
Digital mixers offer many features that analog mixers do not. One of the most useful is programmable sliders, an automation device which allows engineers to keep tabs on more channels than would be possible with their two hands alone. Digital mixers also offer a great variety of EQ effects, many of which are available at the touch of a button and require very little tweaking. In addition, digital mixers are less susceptible than their analog counterparts to interference from outside sources (cell phones, radios, etc.) and produce a practically nonexistent amount of hiss.
Going to digital mixing seriously isn't a resolution you desire to create lightly. It is not for everybody. The Tascam DM-3200 lists at over $4,000, but many retailers offer this model for around $3,500. Before purchasing one, shop around to make sure you're getting the best deal available.

Hiring a Caricature Artist to draw at your party or special event is a great way to insure that your party will be a memorable one! More than any other party favor, a caricature allows the guest to 'take home a piece of the party". But out of the hundreds of caricature artists how do you choose the right one for YOUR event? I'm glad you asked! here are ten surefire tips for helping you make the right choice!
 
1. Do you like his/her drawing style?
 
As the consumer you have the right to choose an artist whose style appeals to you. If you are comparison shopping, and I'm not against it, you SHOULD Do this, look for an artist whose style of work you would like to have on your wall. FEW artists are able to deviate from their "HOME" style. If they draw wild and exaggerated, chances are they will draw YOU wild and exaggerated, and MAYBE you don't WANT that. Since you're BUYING the service you deserve to get what you want, no?
2. Does he have pictures of his LIVE work?
 
ANY artist worth his salt can draw an excellent picture WHEN HE HAS TIME. look on their site to see if they 're live work actually LOOKS like the person they're drawing. Ask them HOW LONG IT TAKES for them to draw. Remember you are PAYING them by the hour. If you have 20 or more guests and you get an artist who draws one picture every ten or twenty minutes then you're in for empty pockets, unsatisfied guests and a long night.
3. How FAST can he draw?
 
If he cant draw with a Three to Five Minute time frame he is SLOW.  The bottom line is that you want as many guests to be drawn as possible. a decent caricature artist can draw between 12-20  caricatures per hr. Keep in mind that color takes longer to draw than black and white.  Ask your artist about how fast they can draw if time is a factor at your event.
 
4. How Personable is He/she?
 
The artist, unlike the hot dog vendor at the food court, is an LIVE ENTERTAINER. You WANT someone who is going to be able to entertain your guests and be personable. He/She should be "part of the event" No matter how FAST the artist draws, every guest at the party might not walk home with a souvenir, BUT if the artist is entertaining, that wont really be an issue. You want people to leave the party with a good feeling about YOU the host/hostess. Your artist can assist you in that.
 
5. What VIBE do you get from him/her?
 
Does the artist REFUSE to meet with you prior to the event> do they rush you off the phone, or are they "all business?" Sometimes this is an indication that they are "all about the money" and while it's TRUE they are working professionals, you want someone who you can work with. Ive heard accounts of people who have been insulted by artists, ignored by them, and even ridiculed all in the name of "fun" Trust your instincts if you get a weird vibe don't hire them.
6. How much experience does he/she have?
 
How long has the artist been doing his job? While we all must begin SOMEWHERE do you really want a novice to try their skills at YOUR event? While there are some novices who are very talented, the dynamic of a live event makes some of them fold. I've SEEN it happen! You want your event to be a success, not some "grainy exercise"for a novice.
7. Is he/she affiliated with other companies?
 
While it's true most caricature artists work as independents I find that it's good to find out who they are or have been affiliated with  in terms of other company's. For example I have worked with numerous event planners in NYC and across the United States for many years. Having worked with these individuals has helped me establish a track record with them for being dependable, professional, one time, courteous and fun. ANY artist off the street can tell you "they're good" how would YOU know that for sure? Professional affiliations help you to ask artist employers how good they are. Testimonials from reputable clients also fall into this category.
8. Are his/her prices reasonable?
 
That is,are the rates  REASONABLE for YOU? that's the key question. Is the artist willing to negotiate?. You might be pleasantly surprised. I've actually come up with many ways my clients can save money by booking me for different types of events and have even thrown in free additional specials at no cost whatsoever. As of this writing, the going rate for party artists are $100.00 to $200.00 per hr, with a 2 hr minimum. Some artists require deposits to secure the date, some desire to be paid in cash, others by check.
 
9. Is he/she willing to travel
 
You need to ask. Some artists charge an additional travel fee based on location. You don't want to hire an artist then find out later there are hidden costs involved. There's nothing illegal about an artist charging a travel fee, but as a client you may not be willing to spend the extra cash for covering that expense.
10. Has he/she worked your type of venue before?
Every event has it's own dynamic. I've seen artists show up at formal events wearing jeans and a tee shirt and utterly ruining the "vibe" of the event just because they aren't accustomed to working in that venue. Some artists DON'T work well with children, some do. Ive even met one artist who "didn't like" to draw the elderly! You would be surprise how many artists "cant draw Black people" It doesn't hurt to ASK the artist the truth, and to ASK FOR SAMPLES.

Creating Music Is For Everyone

Creating music is a slow and pain staking process to the hearts of your listeners. As an indie musician I experienced all of this. It was hard walking around the park, listening to loads of music and even staying in the bathroom for extended periods of time just looking for inspiration. It may not come for days on end, even months. But if it hits you it hits you if you know what I mean. When you get that Eureka moment I suggest you write that down immediately then go home and start working on it before it disappears from your head. Well that's what I do when I made my music.
Sitting down at home processing all that information on my software working for hours is just how it goes. It starts with just a simple beat. It's sort of the spine of the song. Once you got that down you try to fit it with the words you wrote down. This takes a while because fitting the beat with the timing of the song is tricky. I suggest you use a metronome so that your time signature would remain constant. Then if you get that down, it's time to put on the details. Like in a drawing you start with the skeleton, then the shapes then the characteristics of the shapes. If it's a happy song you put on a little funky electric guitar then add a cool bass line to it. If it's a sad song then I suggest mesh your beat with a little piano play with string instruments. If it's a love song then I suggest you add on my favorite saxophone tunes to it. I want you guys to know that these tips I'm telling you are not the only things you should do.
You can think out of the box too. You can even add bag pipe sounds to your beats for all I care as long as you think that it's a good fit to your song. That's what great musicians do; they listen to their influences and then add their own flavor to that sound and "TADA" a completely unique sound that is only by you. Always remember your song won't stand up if you don't get your main beat in cue with the melody, that's what keeps your music together. It may sound easy but I tell you, if you don't have the patience then this isn't the career for you. Making music isn't a onetime deal. It takes patience, creativity, hard work, a little bit of luck and more patience.
Creating music is for everyone! If one has not the gift of using playing instruments or the gift of voice, there are plenty of programs that can create music out there too. So if you are gifted at making beats, don't let that limitation of being unable to play an instrument stop you. All you need is your heart, then you can make your own music.

Eric Clapton - RAMBLING ON MY MIND: The live version from E.C. WAS HERE, where he calls out key change after key change for his guitar solo while building it to a climax. Jeff Beck was impressed - 'nuff said.
Mamas & Papas: DEDICATED TO THE ONE I LOVE: I know it's an old Shirelles tune but how can you argue with those 4-part harmonies belting out the chorus?
Mary Black - SUMMER SENT YOU: A waltz in the guise of a pop song. One of the musicians lets out a "whoop" as the song nears the end.
Neil Young - HARVEST MOON: What sounds like an extended high-hat sizzle is really a straw broom sweeping the floor and being miked. You gotta love low-tech special effects!
The Beatles - SOMETHING, DON'T LET ME DOWN: Paul's melodic, counterpoint bass playing on both of these songs elevates them to another level. The bass lines are almost symphonic.
Led Zeppelin - STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN: It's been played to death but the ascending acoustic guitar line in the verse is still a thing of beauty.
Christine Lavin - ALL I HAVE TO DO IS DREAM / A SUMMER SONG: What A great idea to make a medley of these great songs and when she modulates into a different key in the last verse it blows the roof off.
Beach Boys - KISS ME BABY: The most overlooked gem in the Beach Boys catalog; it was buried on Side 2 of their TODAY! album. The equal to anything on PET SOUNDS or SMILE.
The Who - Keith Moon's drums: The energy on all those Who classics was generated by Moon's hyperactive, whirling dervish drumming style, yet it never sounded like it was overplayed. To this day nobody sounds like "The Moon."
That's twenty examples - a bit more, actually - and I could easily come up with twenty more for a completely different list. Listen to your favorite records and make your own list of those musical moments that keep you coming back for more.
