The College Student's Guide To Finding A Poster

The old saying goes, "If parents knew that they were paying for a four year party, you would only need a high school diploma to get a job.", and it's true. But somewhere between saying goodbye to your high school sweetheart and the first time you get beaten in a beer pong tournament you go through one of the most maturing and culturally enlightening experiences of your life. It's called moving out on your own for the first time... and OH BOY is it a doozy!
It never fails, not even ten minutes after mom or pop's dependable old mini van (I suppose these days it would be an SUV... you kids have it so easy!) pull out of the "visitor's only" parking lot the real decorations come out. And if there's one thing I learned for certain... it's that, with little exception, there's no better way to tell who your roommate is going to be, than by the posters that he/she slaps on the walls with the always fun fun-tack once you guys have total control of the room. So here's a guide to tell you EXACTLY what you're in store for you, without ever having to fumble through all those awkward questions that simply make you look nosey. All you need to do is sit back and wait 'till the writing is on the walls, and you'll know if you got yourself a best bud to romp through the craziest years of your life... or if your going to be spending the next 8 months sneaking out at night, trying not to wake up the nerd police. Here starteth the lesson!
MUSIC POSTERS
Nice and simple. Is there a Rage Against The Machine monk setting himself on fire covering the entire length of your closet wall? Is it a "heart grenade" ala Green Day, those wacky urban poets? Eminem, a hard to find Pearl Jam perhaps? Any of these standards and you got your self a standard, run of the mill non-music listener. They're probably not all that much into the "scene" as much as they know what they like... or at least like to look at. You could do worse! If you got an always less than subtle Jim Morrison, Hendrix, Joplin, Dead, Stones, Beatles thing going... well, you better brush up on you Cheech and Chong. Remember you don't gotta join the party to appreciate the good music that will be blasting out of you partner's radio ohhhh about 26 hours a day... but you better learn MIGHTY quick what a towel at the bottom of the door is a single for. The same is true if you got a huge Dave Matthews, Phish, Bob Marley, or Tupac apparel covering the walls. Only expect the music to be MUCH more constant and infinitely more annoying. There's the rare Cradle Of Filth you might run into. Notice the operative word in that sentence is RUN! Run far, run wide... just RUN!! Mostly it's all good as long as it is a recognizable band, musician, or artist. You're there to learn, even if you aren't into that scene, you might be better off giving new things a try. There's only one no-no. NO BRITNEY! NO BOY BANDS!!! Especially if you're a dude, dude! There ain't no reason on this planet that you need to be staring at those dreamy Justin Timberlake eyes for months at a time once you get passed the age of... oh I don't know... EVER!!! If you cannot find a band you like to put on your walls... there's plenty of other choices, like...

Every one knows you're a smart fella or filly... now show them why. Can you tell the difference between a Salvador Dali and a Van Gogh? I couldn't, but my roommate could. Let just say that if you see a Georgia O'Keeffe going up on your wall that first day. Expect the highest class of fine art students to be discussing all sorts of mind blowing topics at 4am while you're studying for that physics final. Now I don't exactly know what you DO with a fine arts degree... but I know you look FABULOUS doing it. Lets just say that I didn't mind being kept up all night by the fans of my roommate's taste in posters. My only hint about a fine art print is this: frame, frame, frame!!! Why does a lil' black border make you seem like the cat's meow? I have no idea. But I know this, the only difference I could find between a poster and an aficionado is... a frame. Go figure!
HUMOR POSTERS
Maybe your roommate is into Albert Einstein sticking his tongue out (and who wouldn't be), maybe it's one of those crazy fake inspirational posters, how about why beer is better than a half naked (or is she half dressed?) woman? Whatever the case is... that is awesome... for ten minutes! You need a closet full of them to keep the joke new. Here's a tip: have at least four up in rotation at all time. After about a week you put up a new one. Believe me, every time it goes up you and all your friends will find it as funny as the first time you saw it because, lets face it, you grew up in the 90's you have the attention span of an ADD patient! You can even match it up to your mood. Feeling a lil' frisky? Where's that Carmen Electra poster? Wanna show your wild side... put up "What I really learned in School" poster.

Hip-hop was once regarded as an all-male-arena, like the many other male dominated industries. Today, however, women have arrived. From MC Lyte who was launched by Def Jam in the early 80s to the Beyonce and J-Los and Mystic of today, our women are singing, and they are singing to the heart's content! Look at rapper Paccy for instance. She debuted in 2009 and is one of the young ones on the blocks - Paccy wants to make a difference and she raps about "equality in society."
On the other hand, the audience has matured as well. The subjects that can be 'tolerated' and not deemed as gross or ugly are beginning to diminish. Even women can discuss and rap about money, glamor and physical intimacy as our society is opening up to it. It is all a part of life and after all, rapping is about life as well.
Some time back in 2010, we had 14 year-old Brian Bradley a.k.a. rapper Astronomical Kid rapping, "Stop Looking at My Moms." He had candidly said that he expected other teenagers to relate to the song because having people stare at you mother is definitely offensive. The sad part is that it happens - it happens to all women. Most rap song videos have women presented as mere objects; with a man in the center and poorly clad women, in dozens, surrounding him. Such representation degrades; bringing down the self-depreciating, self-negating, underprivileged black woman even further. Even statistics show that many Black-American women believe that they have nothing more than sex to offer to a man. Rap lyrics, more often, reinstall these concepts destroying the self-worth as well. What good are we doing to our women and children if this is all we rap about? Perhaps such content can be enjoyed for a while, but there is a need for a healthy mix and a healthy culture.
The kind of "Real Music" which is evolving from ladies doesn't have explicit content that young listeners need to be protected from and nor is it too naive for the adult rap-fan. However, although the fan is growing to understand and accept the woman rapper, the real battle for her lies within the industry. The industry is still male dominated, still has men rapping about women in disparaging ways and it still has people who don't want to share the space. There are people who will make her look bad and there are also followers who will believe that. Above this, lie the societal norms and beliefs about the singers; with the many criminal cases and records registered against stars, there is a general notion that every hip hop world-star artist is a criminal. The woman has to break all these barriers, look ahead and make good music.

Hip Hop Music and the Youth Connection

Since hip hop music is such a youthful form of music, there has always been speculation about how it affects the youth of our country. So many people write so many things and talk so much about the hip hop culture. Often, it is the negative that is highlighted; the "ill-effects" are mentioned. But it all isn't as bad as it looks. I am very impressed with motivational rapper Marcus Parker's words when he explained that rap music is about everything that happens out in the streets. It portrays the life outside one's comfort zone.
The streets are no heavens. It is the hard life; the rough life and many a times the life we are not accustomed with. Most of the artists who rise to fame come from such modest backgrounds. Many of the artists face prison-time and indulge in abuses because they aren't from the well-kept, well-educated and 'fortunate' backgrounds like all those of reading this article. Yes, it is a fact that most of the rappers still live the hard life. In fact, we can understand this from the very origin of this genre; it stemmed from ghetto and gang communities of youngsters in the troubled streets of Africa, in the 1980s. Rap lyrics have content derived from people who face these circumstances and the things that are important to them. These themes may, hence, seem inappropriate to the sophisticated mind. But when you analyze this music from the writer's point of view and the listener's perception you will understand the 'connection'.
The connection between a rapper and his fan is not just the instrumental and the rhythm; but also the experience and feeling. It is the emotion that creates the strong bond and the fan-following. When a rapper raps about sexuality, it is perhaps something that the youngster can understand. Certainly the explicit content isn't the best flavor but we must wake up to the fact that physicality is an integral part of our social being. Beside, trying to apprehend what your son or daughter appreciates will help you connect with them better. There are also songs that I like although they may not represent me as a person. I like hip hop rap songs for their beats; I may not agree with the lyric but I can certainly enjoy the music.
Further exploring the genre will introduce you to various forms of music that the industry offers. There is Jazz-rap and Conscious Hip Hop music and many other forms which will uplift the spirit and inspire far beyond. Even Underground hip-hop is finding a greater audience with platforms offered by the World Wide Web today. So, why should we be intimidated or apprehensive? Music does inspire, and when it does not; it merely entertains. Negative does not influence as strongly as the positive.
As adults, it is important to be aware of what our children are going through as well as give them the space to explore their worlds. We have all passed through that phase and grown to be who we are. In the end, a healthy upbringing will always overpower any superficial influence. Let the music play because it is only music and not an instruction for life!
