Since When Is the Saxophone Not a Rock and Roll Instrument?

Thank you for proving that the saxophone is a rock and roll instrument! This a comment I received recently after someone watched one of my sax videos. Two friends were arguing whether the sax was even considered to be a valid instrument in rock and roll.
For me, this is such a preposterous question to even ask but then when I think about the state of today's commercial music, radio, video etc it really is a valid one.
By now I suppose there are many, many young people who would not even consider that the sax belongs or even has a place in any type of modern rock-based commercial music... mostly because it doesn't!
This was true to some extent even when I discovered the great tone of the saxophone in rock and roll back in the early 70's. Sure, you'd hear it in some mainstream groups like Springsteen's, Supertramp, and Billy Joel to name just a few but the list doesn't get too long.
If you were like me, a big fan of rock-based music you had to do some digging for yourself because the mainstream broadcasters weren't going to let you hear any of that.
Interestingly enough, the further back I dug the more I found. Meaning that the further back you go the more sax was used on rock and roll music. In fact, when rock and roll started sax was king. Not many groups went without one and many had more than one sax in the line-up.
When most people hear someone talk about the beginning of rock and roll they immediately think about the mid 50's with Bill Haley and the Comets, Elvis and on from there. The truth is that by that time rock and roll was almost 10 years old.
The late 40's had some wild blues based R & B music that was so new and crazy sounding people started calling it rock and roll, not the media though, just people in the music business like musicians, producers and some in-the-know fans. Musicians were singing about rock and roll too, it's meaning being of the sexual nature.
Anyway, the sax sound that was being produced by some of these young up-and-coming players not only fit into this new sound but was a big part of it. One of the early wild screamers on the sax was Illinois Jacquet, who as part of Lionel Hampton's group recorder a live solo way back in May of 1942. That sax solo is considered to be the first recorded solo that inspired the players who would come up through the 40's and be part of the new music that would be called rock and roll. Illinois Jacquet was 19 years old at the time.
The recording was "Flying Home" and it signified the end of the big band swing era and the beginning of the wild R & B era which would turn into rock and roll by the end of the 40's.
Fast forward to the late 40's, that's when rock and roll started to be. It evolved over the next few years and became so popular that eventually hit mainstream in the mid 50's. It's around this time that the guitar overshadowed the sax in these groups because guitar became a big part of the rhythm and eventually started taking over the solo's too.
This was just a natural progression which was dictated by the music. The sax never left completely and other elements came in like the piano and so it continues.
The saxophone, with it's unique sound capabilities to go from the mellowest tone to the wildest screaming instrument makes it one of the most versatile instruments we have.

The Large Advent Speakers

The Large Advent Speaker is easily one of the most popular and fondly remembered speakers of the mid 70's. Many wonderful records were played lovingly through their rich tweeters and full woofers and maybe you are remembering this time nostalgically. Well, whatever the case let's talk about what exactly the Large Advent Speaker was exactly.
In 1973, the Advent Company unveiled a new version of their current speaker line dubbed the Large Advent Loudspeaker. This Large Advent Speaker was similar to the earlier Advent models however it contained higher quality - or at least different quality - drivers and crossovers. The original woofer had what was called a Masonite frame - this was replaced in the Advent Speaker with a more standard metal frame. Also, the original style woofers had their places taken by new flush mounted tweeters. The newer tweeters were designed to handle more audio power but were overall similar to their predecessors.
So what was all the buzz about this Large Advent Speaker?
The manuals that would have come with a Large Advent Speaker described this new speaker was created to have a higher fidelity high end response in order to service the fidelity improvements of the 70's. Overall these speakers looked very similar to early Advent speakers despite the significant improvements "under the hood". There were a few noticeable differences with the Advent Speaker however. First, the beveled front on this new speaker was more rounded than previously. The front grill was made darker in almost a burlap color instead of the traditional Advent off white. The driver cut outs on the grills were made more rectangular.
Fans of the Large Advent Loudspeaker enjoy it for its high quality vintage sound. The bass response is incredible deep compared to other similar era speakers like the Dynaco A-25's. The midrange was described as creamy and clear however this is not the strongest audio range on the Advent Speaker. The high ends are clear and uncolored. Some audiophiles claim to hear a roll off around the 4k range. When comparing the Advent Loudspeakers audio qualities to modern day systems, it is clear that this is a vintage loudspeaker, but that is precisely the point. Many vintage audio fans find the Large Vintage Speaker to be one of the musically satisfying speakers they have ever heard.
How did the Advent Speaker look and sound?
As far as the looks of this speaker, it could be described a heavy or "bookshelf" speaker. They measure about 14" wide, 26" all and about a 12" deep. They weigh 40lbs each so you might want to find a friend when it comes time to move these bad boys! The woofer size on this speaker is 10 inches with a medium sized tweeter. In terms of the rear audio connections, the Large Advent Speaker was a bit behind the other speakers of its day. For instance, the Advent Loudspeaker does not accept banana plugs. Luckily, the high quality steel terminals are easy to screw and unscrew. Also, there is a three stage switch to adjust the tweeter volume level relative to the rest of the mix.
Overall, the Advent Loudspeaker is a retro audiophiles dream. The high power bass and easily listenable midrange will bring back memories of your favorite 70's grooves. Combine that with a slick and classic enclosure, the Large Advent Loudspeaker is satisfying whether the listener is engaged or just listening to background music. If you have a chance to pick up a Large Advent Loudspeaker at low cost, I would not wait, I would run!

Guide to Advent Speaker Repairs

One of the most common pastimes for vintage audio enthusiasts is Advent Speaker repair. Not because they enjoy it but because it is a necessary point of the game. There are many things that will require advent speaker repair - water damage, physical damage, component failure and of course, the dreaded foam disintegration.
The first thing we need to understand is what we can and what we can't repair in an Advent speaker. The good news is that Advent speakers are relatively simple as far as electronic systems go. We can repair the enclosures, the tweeter and woofer foam, and in many cases, we can replace the electrical components and wiring. While technically, everything can be fixed individually on an advent unit, you may not want to bother if multiple components are busted, especially the cross over and the enclosure itself.
Advent Speaker Repair Preparation:
So, before we go any farther, it is our personal recommendation that you hire out a professional to fix up your advent speakers if the Advent Speaker Repair is anything other than re-coning. And we recommend this double if you want the job done right and professionally - It will end up saving you both headaches and money. That said, we do endorse fixing loudspeaker cones and that is what we are going to talk about here. If you are a DIY kind of person and ok with your speakers being out of commission for a while, read on!
Before you begin your Advent Loudspeaker Repair your advent speaker cone, you will almost certainly need an exacto knife and a reconing kit. If you are under the age of 18, please consult your parents before undertaking a project like this with potentially dangerous tools like exacto knifes.
So on to loudspeaker reconing! Speaker reconing is probably the most common and luckily, the cheapest Advent loudspeaker repair that is regularly required. In order to re-cone a loudspeaker, you will need a basic level of mechanical skill. Basically, reconing means the removal and replacement of the loudspeaker cone. This can be done in roughly 1 hour and there are generally kits that will come complete with all the parts you need, as well as instructions and glue.
Advent Loudspeaker Repair Steps:
First you will need to determine what model of loudspeaker you have. You can usually find this on the back of the cabinet on a sticker or stamped on the material. After writing down this information, you will need to remove the speaker. After removing the loudspeaker, measure the diameter and check for any addition marketing on the speaker to make sure you have the right model. Once you know your model, you will be able to track down the proper reconing kit using a search tool like Google. You should also try to contact reputable dealers when looking for parts, quotes and genuine reconing kits (if available). A quality reconing kit will make sure you have all of the required instructions and materials for the next step.
The next step? Read the directions. Seriously, no 2 speakers are exactly alike so your best bet is to follow the directions in the reconing kit for your specific loudspeaker model. If you aren't up to the task, there are plenty of Advent speaker repair and general repair shops that will happily recone your loudspeaker. Once again, take it to Google to find someone near you. You should now have an excellent grasp on Advent Speaker Repair and know just what to do when you blow your first cone!

Rockabilly Sex Appeal Helped Propel Early Careers And Enrage Parents

Nobody had ever seen anything quite like Elvis Presley before when he started appearing on stages and live television broadcasts in the mid 1950s. Some had seen the rhythm and blues performers that Elvis in large part modeled himself after, but no one had seen a white performer behave "that way." Elvis' music was exciting and his stage presence was equally so. He had strong sex appeal and he knew how to use it. And he wasn't alone. Sex appeal was a big part of the equation for many rockabilly stars. And it was a big part of the reason why parents and other "responsible" adults hated the music!
By today's standards, the Elvis of 1955 looks fairly tame. But back then, he hit the scene with a raw sensuality that seemed at the same time both dangerous and innocent. It was like he wasn't necessarily trying to act that way; it was just the way he was, and how could he help it? Off stage he was very quiet and polite--a real nice boy. But on stage, he turned into a pulsating, suggestive, dangerous "cretin" who many thought should be banned and kept away from the kids. But it was Elvis' ground-breaking sensuality that attracted girls and boys alike: The girls wanted to be with Elvis and the boys wanted to be Elvis!
But Elvis didn't hold the exclusive market on this unique sensuality for long. Many other musicians recognized a successful formula when they saw and heard one and they took off in many different directions from the starting point that Elvis established. Ricky Nelson expertly played the role of pretty-boy teen idol as he started cranking out rockabilly hits. Eddie Cochran's natural good looks and undeniable charisma made many think that he would soon rival Elvis. Of course, his early death in a car crash made it impossible to ever know for sure.
Gene Vincent played a harder-edged bad boy with a greaser image. Vincent didn't pretend that there was anything "nice" about him. He'd had a few rough blows in life--being permanently crippled in a motorcycle accident which nearly cost him his leg--and you could see the roughness in his on-stage presence.
The ladies were getting into the act too. Wanda Jackson was as close to a female Elvis as there ever was. In the same way that Elvis seemed to innocently use his sensuality, Jackson broke the mold for performing women. She broke away from the cowgirl outfits that women were wearing on stage at the time and began to appear on stage in tight pencil skirts and high heels. She cut a stunning figure on stage and she knew it. But she was also classy and forever changed the way female rock and roll and country performers approached being on stage.
Sparkle Moore developed a presence that was more the female Gene Vincent than Elvis. She appeared on stage in "greaser" cloths complete with jeans and leather jacket and a female version of the pompadour haircut that was so popular with the men. In fact, her hair was not unlike the haircut Stray Cat Brian Setzer sported during the band's early 1980s run to the top.
Each of these performers--and many others--rewrote the book on stage presence. They defined the look and tone of early rock and roll performers. Parents and establishment adults were shocked at such "lewd" behavior and they hated these people and the music they made. This, of course, only elevated their place in the hearts and minds of teenagers all that much more!
