Misdirection in Magic Tricks

Basic Rules for Misdirection in Magic If you want to perform magic and not get "caught" you must know how to perform basic "misdirection". I'd like to give you some tips to get you well on your way to performing amazing magic!
  • Always Act NATURAL while performing! Don't tense up or speed up when you are doing your "move"!
  • Your Audience will look where you look! If you don't want them looking at your right hand - don't look at it yourself!
  • If you need to "pocket" something in your hand, draw attention to the other hand by looking at it, or doing something else with the other hand!
  • Larger, overarching motions will cover small motions that you want to conceal from your audience
An example of misdirection: Pretend to toss something into the air and then look into the air as if you really had! Your spectator will look where you look! Do not underestimate the power of suggestion - it is one of the Magicians most powerful tools! Don't forget - you must always, always act natural. If you don't your audience will suspect something is up! Along with this principle, don't overuse misdirection or you will arouse suspicion. Finally, to gain confidence in acting natural, you must practice, practice, practice! Once you have practiced enough, you won't be thinking to yourself "Remember to act natural! I must act natural!" you simply will be acting natural. It should also go without saying, Never repeat a magic trick - ever! If you do they will get "wise" or try to figure it out. Always leave them wanting more! Practice and put these principles into use, and you will step up your magic.
